The latest version 1.1.0 of WPCasa Currency Converter is now ready for download.
In this update we fully replace the Yahoo Finance API (which has been shut down recently), with a new currency exchange rate provider.
Until now the WPCasa Currency Converter has used the Yahoo Finance API to convert listing prices based on a given exchange rate. Unfortunately this service has been shut down now. And while this doesn’t caused an error, the converter simply did not work anymore.
While researching for an alternative provider we came across a few. Some of them are free, some of them requires to sign up. Some of them offer free plans, some others put limitations on their free plans, and some require to use an API Key. In the end we found a simple, public and free API which provides access to data which comes straight from the European Central Bank and gets updated once a day.
Beside that we also laid the foundation to extend the currency converter with additional providers in the near future. Soon you will be able to comfortably choose from a selection of providers and that way you can choose for example a service which is free but gets only updated once a day, or to go with a premium provider, pay a little but get access to more currencies and exchange rates which get updated multiple times a day. So, stay tuned on that one.
And while we worked on that we’ve also improved the loading animation. So instead of the “Converting…” Text which appears during the conversion, a simple loading animation will be displayed by default. But if you prefer text you can now just set this up to your likings from within the newly added option panel (WP-Admin > WPCasa > Settings > Currency Converter)
Last but not least we’ve also improved some other bits and made sure that this addon is fully compatible with PHP 7.2 (and lower).
So go ahead and make sure to update the WPCasa Currency Converter to the latest version (1.1.0), to make it work again and to benefit from the new features. You can either update it straight from your backend (assuming you’ve activated your license), or straight download it from your account over at WPCasa.
